Job Specification: Test & Configuration Engineer / Computer Engineer
Department: Production
Reports to: Test & Configuration Team Lead
Location: Blackcore Technologies HQ, Bristol
Position Summary
Our Engineers are responsible for ensuring all newly built units are thoroughly tested, configured, and prepared for delivery according to customer requirements. This includes running diagnostics, installing operating systems, configuring software, and performing necessary updates. The role also involves diagnosing and repairing returned units, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring compliance with company standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Testing & Configuration
Conduct comprehensive hardware testing & monitoring using tools such as Prime95, HWinfo, IPMItools and OCCT to verify hardware integrity and functionality.
Update system and motherboard firmware, including BIOS, FRU, and SDR, as required.
Updating firmware on devices such as raid cards & network interfaces
Install and configure operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and customer specific.
Perform customer-specific software tests and configurations after installation, ensuring all units meet customer, and order specifications.
2. Repair & Troubleshooting
Assist in diagnosing and repairing defective products by replacing faulty components and following the company’s Return Material Authorisation (RMA) procedures.
Keep defective parts separate and properly logged with the required documentation for further analysis or return to suppliers.
3. Quality Assurance
Ensure all units leave the facility fully functional, meeting all specification, testing, configuration, and update requirements, as outlined in Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) forms and work instructions.
Complete PDI forms accurately, documenting all relevant testing and configuration activities.
4. Customer Interaction
Communicate directly with customers when necessary to resolve software-related issues, ensuring timely and satisfactory resolutions.
5. Administration & Reporting
Review the daily work schedule to prioritise testing and configuration tasks, raising any queries or issues with the department lead or senior engineer.
Accurately record manufacturing order routing (timekeeping) and maintain detailed records of all activities.
Keep the team lead or senior engineer informed of any issues, updates, or relevant information related to testing and configuration.
6. Continuous Improvement
Actively participate in any process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, product quality, or team performance.
Suggest improvements to testing and configuration techniques or equipment where applicable, contributing to a more streamlined production process.
7. Miscellaneous Duties
Undertake other duties as assigned by the Test & Configuration Team Lead or senior engineer, demonstrating a flexible and adaptable approach to work.
Maintain a clean and organised working area, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
Key Competencies:
1. Technical Skills
Proficiency in running diagnostic software and tools for hardware testing.
Experience with operating system installation and configuration across various platforms (e.g., Windows, Linux).
Familiarity with imaging hardware and software for hard drive preparation.
Understanding of networking technologies and IP configuration
Strong troubleshooting and repair skills for hardware and software issues.
2. Attention to Detail:
Meticulous approach to testing and configuration to ensure all machines meet customer and company standards.
Thoroughness in completing PDI forms and other production documentation.
3. Communication Skills:
Clear and professional communication with internal teams and customers.
4. Time Management & Organisation:
Ability to prioritise tasks effectively and meet deadlines within a fast-paced production environment.
Strong record-keeping and administrative skills.
5. Health & Safety Awareness:
Knowledge of company health and safety policies, including maintaining a safe and hazard-free work area.
Qualifications & Experience:
Essential:
- Experience in a testing, configuration, or related role within the technology or electronics industry.
- Technical knowledge of hardware testing, firmware updates, and operating system installations.
- Familiarity with pre-delivery inspection processes.
Desirable:
- Certifications in relevant technical areas (e.g., CompTIA A+, Linux Essentials).
- Experience with customer-facing technical support or troubleshooting.
- Understanding of overclocking & relationships between components
Working Environment:
Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 20kg and handle repetitive tasks involving hands and wrists.
Work Conditions: Operates in a fast-paced production environment requiring attention to detail and adherence to tight schedules.
